Hearts and chocolates and flowers. Oh my.

TH and I had a nice Valentine's Day yesterday. How about you? We dined over fondue, shrimp, good wine, and yummy bread. And didn't leave the restaurant reeking of smoke + cheese. It was fabulous.

A few weeks ago, my parents sent us a red heart garland that I hung up in our apartment. And then immediately received a heavy sigh from my husband. I don't think he liked it. Anyway, one of my tutoring students, thought my parents were funny for sending the garland. I then explained to her what the American traditions for V-Day were. The country is full of red and pink and chocolates. And Hallmark makes a killing.

A few years ago, a friend sent me a box of Strawberry Shortcake valentine cards so I gave one to my French tutor yesterday. First, to be nice and second, to show her what the kids in the USA do on V-Day. She asked me: "You even give these to girls?" In France, V-Day (if celebrated) is more of a "couples" holiday. But Darin did tell me that there were a lot of men and women in line to buy flowers yesterday and we did spot a lady in the restaurant wearing a scarf with hearts.

I think Australia is more like France when it comes to Valentine's Day. Its a day for lovers. Glad you had a nice day - that meal sounds delicious and peaceful!

Mexico is like the States! It´s so much fun for the kids! I have always tried to explain what we do for valentine´s day to the French and then yesterday when I put pics on the family blog of Little S´s V- Day adventures (they´re on my regular blog too), mil wrote "isn´t he a little young for things ike that?" not understanding that it´s totally innocent!

I'm glad the holiday seems to be morphing into a day for everybody to enjoy, not just romantic partners. It doesn't take anything away from couples and gives everyone something sweet to celebrate. :)

Happy belated Valentine's Day to you too!

That sounds like a wonderful evening! For my part, I took care of 13 (!) couples, the restaurant was (over)decorated with red hearts everywhere, and red roses for all the women. And of course hubby forgot everything about Valentine's day.

last year, some friends who had lived in Mexico said it is called the Day of Love & Friendship -- I like that! :) I also like your new blog design, Emily. :)

Ahhh, I still remember getting a Peanut's Valentine with "Hot Stuff" written on it from a little boy I was crushing on in the 3rd grade... memories! How cute that your friend send you Strawberry Shortcake cards!

V-day is a source of endless confusion for me! I'm glad I'm not the only one.

I'm glad you had a nice valentine's day. It really interesting to hear about living in the french culture. Sometimes I don't remember that every culture is not the same. :-)
