It's cold. I'm cold. I have a cold.

Someone in France gets sick, they do the bises (the cheek kisses) with a friend, who does it with someone else, and the sickness spreads. Voila. Emily gets it from that person who got kissed by another person, who was coughed upon by that other person. I love the tradition of the bises, but not when everyone and their mother are sick. And my husband has refused to kiss me on the lips since Friday. Life can be so hard.

But, I do love this cold weather. Bundling up in a scarf and hat that I knit myself is fun. We finally turned on the heat last night. It seems like ages ago when we turned it off due to the warm weather arriving.

We saw some fantastic movies this weekend that I'd like to recommend to the 3 or 4 people that read this blog. "The Life of Others" was wonderful. It was hard for me to watch it in German while trying to quickly (not kidding...those words moved quickly) read the subtitles in French. I just wanted to relax with my cough and watch a movie. But, watching this movie was a job and a half. But worth it. There are only a couple movies that I can think of that did not affect me until the last second or two...this one and "Life is Beautiful". I remember seeing "Life is Beautiful" with some girlfriends and the 3 of us were balling at the very end and had to beg someone nearby to give us some tissues. I don't think I ever cried so hard after a movie. I tried to contain myself a bit more with "The Life of Others".

The other movie was "Stardust". We drove to Geneva to see this one. A very fun movie. Very cute, but not too cute. TH said it reminded him of "The Princess Bride". This movie had a great cast, but Robert De Niro cannot play a homosexual very well. For such an amazing actor, I wasn't buying it.

Duuuuuuude! I was just talking to my mom recently about when we saw "Life Is Beautiful" and then met my parents for lunch. The three of us were so drained and puffy from all of that crying. Good times, man... good times.

I think my friends and I cried for about 1/2 hour when we finished watching Life is Beautiful. Thanks to your advice I will go see Das Leben der Anderen with my tissues at the ready. Hope you feel better soon!

Ah, Emily, "La Vie des autres" was so fabulous, the BEST movie I have seen in a long, long time. I saw it in a theater alone because my boyfriend had already seen it a week or so before, and he told me I just HAD to see it before it was too late... I'm so glad I saw it, too, because it was the best movie experience I had had in a while. I cried really, really hard, to be honest, and I'm not ashamed to say so!

Hope you get rid of that cold soon -- I totally understand, I've been trying to fight off the germs myself. I've also been trying to hold off turning on the heat 'til November 1st, but I just don't know if I'm going to make it, especially after the temperature drop today! We may just have to turn on the heat tonight... Ours is electric, though, and REALLY expensive.

Emily, I hear you on the cold front! I too have been fighting a cold for the last week. Get well! :)

I thought "The Life of Others" was excellent as well. And I agree with you about the ending. Good call.

I haven't seen Das Leben der Anderen yet, but Ulrich Mühe is one of my favourite actors. He also plays the lead role in a German TV series where he's a forensic pathologist. Arte showed old episodes this summer, it's called Der letzte Zeuge (The last witness). I was so shocked when he died earlier this year :-(
I've got a cold right now too, I spent last weekend in bed.
And talking about crying: I just finished The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold and cried buckets during the last few chapters *sniffle*
