Where's the wall at...yo?

My friend, Heidi, and I just got back from spending three cold, wet, but very fun days in Berlin, Germany. We stayed in the very popular (with the young backpackers) Circus Hostel. No, we didn't stay in bunk beds with 20 other young single co-eds. We booked a private double with bath and it was great. The type of room for those older than dirt. For anyone planning a trip to Berlin, I highly recommend this fine establishment.Great breakfast, by the way.

Is it terrible that we wanted to see the remains of the Berlin Wall first and foremost? I had no idea how tall and oppressive it was. I read that 1.5 km still remains in Berlin. Most of it is now the East Side Gallery.
We visited Checkpoint Charlie and the museum and learned many things about the Wall like how people attempted to escape to the West Side. Digging tunnels!? We went to the Jewish Museum. There was a Holocaust Memorial within the museum that permitted visitors to walk on it. It was eerie. We also visited the Berlin Holocaust Memorial that is as large as a football field. I was pretty pissed when I saw people leaving their trash on the memorial. Hey, there's a trash can 20 feet from you, dude. I'm not a huge meat-eater, but had to try Currywurst, a Berlin specialty. I also had creamed herring with onions and apples...yum. Sadly, Heidi is a vegetarian and missed out on this animal goodness.

sounds like a great trip. We never made it to Berlin. We did go to Dachau, outside Munich. It was weird. It felt odd to be a tourist and taking photos at a place where so many people lost so much. It was also very moving. That was 15 years ago, and I still remember it like we were there this morning. Such an eerie feeling in the air.

That looked like SUCH a cool trip! I was in Berlin very briefly back in 2000 for a job at the time, but I only just passed through, so I hardly had any time to visit anything. I hope to make it back one day, though...

Wow, the hostel room looks like a hotel room! I'll definitely have to keep it in mind when I go to Berlin. Looks like you had a fun time over there!

I'm glad you had such a fun time in Berlin. The Jewish Museum is great, I spent hours and hours in there (I'm a museum geek who has to read every note and sign, haha!). I like Currywurst, I eat it everytime I'm in east Germany. It just feels more authentic there.
